Our Square Dance Program

Our program to indoctrinate and teach new dancers is one of the finest in the area… Our objective is to provide instructions that will allow a graduate to dance to any caller in the area at the level of instruction to which they have graduated… (This years’ various series of instructional classes will start in December 2008. Sam calls & teaches in several cities and clubs. Check with him for dates & times.

We recognize that having some experienced dancers as “helpers” or as they are called, “Angels,” always gives the newer dancer a feeling of security and as a result, a group of experienced dancers will always be there to assist and to keep the caller informed of any problems that may be encountered or to fill a square if necessary.

Square dancing is a very social function…As such, the newer dancer will be given opportunities to join in many activities during the learning process…We have such activities as fish fries, carry in dinners, visitations to other clubs where a format of sharing the dance with the club members will occur, and special dances just for you…The excitement of going to another club, hearing a different caller, and meeting new friends is one that can only be personally experienced to describe… From the first time you are in a different group and experience the success of a left allemande, is one that says “This is terrific.”

Once a year, the West Coast Dance Association holds a major week-end dance, and a state square dance convention. A guest caller from out of the area and a local caller will be the dance leaders. You, as a new dancer will be given an opportunity to dance at the week-end dance with other dancers who are also going through square dance instructions… Most of us who teach will use a similar schedule of teaching the calls you will need to know to dance at week-end festivities and you will all be able to enjoy being part of such a big affair… as well as provided the opportunity to dance to the professional guest caller..

You might ask, what if I have to miss a session or two? Your caller and angels will come in early on the dance nights and assist you in “catching up.” We will do everything within our capability to keep everyone at the same level of dance instruction; however, it is important that a commitment be made to attend the instructional sessions as there are three other couples in the square who will be depending upon you.

You might also ask when do I become one of the experienced dancers? Our answer to you is that after the very first dance night you will be square dancing and from then on it is just a matter of learning additional steps or calls…

You will be a member of a team that is having a great time learning all of the calls and dancing them as the caller is giving them to you pretty much extemporaneously…You will learn the definition and execution of the calls and it is your callers’ responsibility to give them to you in a manner that is smooth and well timed…
